90 | Insidious 4: The Last Key

Synopsis: Another prequel(!) taking place before the events of the first Insidious movie. Elise (Lin Shaye) is haunted by the events of her childhood, growing up in a haunted house on the grounds of a prison. Not the greatest place to be if you’re psychic. She is tricked into opening a locked door in the basement, releasing a demon that destroys her family.

Many years later, Elise is contacted by the new owner of her childhood home to get rid of the dark presence there. Accompanied by her loyal sidekicks, she heads home to confront the demon she released.

89 | The House of the Devil

Synopsis: Samantha is a college sophomore anxious to move out of the dorms & escape her nightmare roommate. She finds her dream apartment, but needs to make a few hundie real quick in order to pay first month’s rent.  Desperate for an under the table gig, she responds to a flyer asking for a babysitter that night, which also happens to be the night of a full lunar eclipse which their town is in the perfect position to witness.  When she arrives at the house out in the middle of nowhere she finds that circumstances are a bit different than she had been led to believe.  Against the wishes of the friend who drops her off, Samantha decides to take the job anyway.  It’s just for a couple hours, after all.  How much could possibly go wrong? Dun dun DUN!

It's time to go more further into the further than we've ever gone before. That's right, it's time for the next installation in the Insidious franchise, Insidious 4: The Last Key. I don't know what's happening in the thumbnail image below, but it looks intriguing. 

88 | Creep 2

Director: Patrick Brice

Synopsis: Sara is a filmmaker who has made nine episodes of a nearly unwatched YouTube show called Encounters, where she meets up with men who post especially pathetic ads on Craigslist. Frustrated by her lack of views & feeling creatively stagnant, she goes looking for a good subject for her tenth & final episode. She thinks she hits the jackpot when she discovers a cryptic ad looking for a videographer to “go deep” with, so she ventures out (alone) to meet Aaron, who we all remember as the psychotic weirdo from Creep 1.

Aaron claims he wants total transparency in their new relationship, so he lays the situation out right away for Sara - he is a serial killer by profession, but he’s having a midlife crisis & has lost touch with why he used to love the work. He wants Sara to help him make a documentary about himself, either as the final summation of his life’s work or as a way to revitalize his passion.

Both Creep movies are currently available for streaming on US Netflix.

87 | Thelma

Synopsis: The movie opens with a little girl (Thelma) & her father in the woods hunting deer. After setting his sights on a doe, the father aims for the little girl’s head. Cut to ten or so years later - Thelma is a college freshman living away from her very religious helicopter parents for the first time. An attraction to a fellow student seems to lead to violent seizures, during which Thelma evens seems to be affecting the environment around her. Is this why young Thelma's father pointed his gun at her? Was he afraid of what Thelma might become?

Somehow, The Bloodlust managed to miss the opportunity to review Mark Duplass' unsettling and uncomfortable thriller, Creep (though, it did make it onto a couple of our "EOY top ten" lists. So to make up for missing the first one, next time you hear from us, we'll be joined by our dear friend, Sandra, as we review and discuss the aptly named Creep sequel, Creep 2. 

86 | The Pact

Writer/Director: Nicholas McCarthy

Synopsis: Annie is forced to return to her childhood home after the death of her estranged mother. While initially hesitant to make the trip, she changes her mind when her recovering addict sister Nicole disappears while cleaning out the home. Thinking her sister has just fallen off the wagon again, Annie stays in the home after attending the funeral. It’s then that she realizes there may be a supernatural reason for her sister’s disappearance.
